We have a duty towards music, namely, to invent it.

My compositions
Writing music is an occasional hobby of mine. I'm not claiming I'm any good at it, but I have a few pieces I'm willing to share.

Prelude in C major (9/18/2003)

This is a little piece I wrote while taking Music Theory. It wasn't for an assignment or anything (which is good because I ignored many rules of counterpoint), I just wanted to play with some of the stuff we were learning. It's only two voices and it's slow, so it's really really easy. However, I really love the melody.

I played around a bit with some different sorts of harmonies in this piece, so it sounds a little bizarre. It's pretty easy, except that it's in three-on-four polyrhythms. It's somewhat inspired by Chopin's Etude in F minor from Three New Etudes. That piece is also three-on-four with a chromatic melody. In my opinion this is the best piece I've written.

Prelude in G major (7/18/2004)

I decided before I started writing this piece that I wanted to use a chord I particularly liked from Scriabin's later works: G-C-E-F#. I actually rewrote this whole piece after being unhappy with my first version; I thought it was too boring. I decided to put the MIDI up here if you're curious. This revision I think might be a little too abbreviated, but I generally think too short is better than too long.

Prelude in E minor (11/17/2005)

Originally, I set out to make a piece similar to the second movement of Scriabin's second sonata, except in 4/4 time. Sadly, I was unable to compose anything remotely as cool, so the piece evolved into something else. You can hear some ideas in this vein starting at measure 24. Actually when I first wrote that section (beginning at measure 24), I thought it sounded familiar. In fact, it's related to a few measures from the third movement of Schumann's piano concerto. Anyway, this piece has a lot of energy and is fairly virtuousic. There is a flaw in the pdf file at the bottom of the second page. I couldn't fix it, and I have no idea what is causing it.

Prelude in D major (2/4/2007)

This piece was somewhat an experiment in dissonance; although most of the harmonies are pretty standard, there's a lot of chromaticisms that mix it up. I feel like I'm starting to get a little more fluent in key modulations, something that I admire about Chopin, and you can hear this piece frequently changing key. Interestingly, this is my first 3/4 time piece.

I wasn't in the best mood when I wrote this, so it's not exactly easy listening. It's short and fun to play.

Back when I took music theory, one of our final assignments was to harmonize a popular song. I deviated slightly from traditional chorale style, but I think it sounds good. I intentionally made the suspensions resolving downward to musically illustrate the words "falling down."
